It was a successful night at the Arundel & Littlehampton District Swimming Gala, with our Cubs ‘A’ Team winning the competition and our Scout team coming in 3rd place.

Say hello to Eastergate Beavers

After months of planning, an open night and series of taster sessions, on Wednesday 3rd October we officially welcomed our newest Beavers and leaders to 1st Barnham. Together they are ‘Eastergate Beaver Colony’ formed thanks to a group of parents stepping forward to lead the section.

The fifteen beavers and their two new leaders made their promise in front of parents and invited guests before enjoying some games and party food. More photos from the special promise party can be viewed in the album below. 

Kieran, one of the new leaders said; “Since joining I’ve experienced an amazing warmth and friendliness from all the team. Being involved has given me access to a wealth of training opportunities that are well structured and flexible”. 

The Group’s growth plans don’t stop there! With demand for Scouting in the Barnham area at an all time high we are seeking new adults to join our existing teams and in early 2019 we’ll start to form our third Cub Pack to ensure all our beaver scouts can continue on their scouting adventure and learn skills for life.

Brighton Sewer Tour

On Saturday (29th Sept) fifteen 1st Barnham Scouts descended into the smelly underworld of the South Coast to tour Brighton’s sewers.

Starting off just underneath Brighton Pier at 9:30 am on Saturday, the gloved and hard-hat clad Scouts were guided through 366 metres of the Victorian sewer system, learning how they were first built, how they have changed over the past 100 or so years and seeing how our waste is dealt with first hand.

The Southern Water tour took the Scouts along narrow, whitewashed corridors and up and down metal ladders to see the route of the day’s waste and stormwater, which was flowing to the brand new water treatment plant in Peacehaven before being pumped out to sea.

Reactions to the sewer were mixed… “Why’s it so disgusting?” asked one Scout “because it’s a sewer,” came the answer. “Smells a bit like Glastonbury,” said another. “It would make a great log flume,” suggested a third.

After around 90 minutes underground the Scouts emerged through a manhole in the middle of Old Steine and – after a thorough wash – went off to enjoy the pleasures of Brighton Pier before heading back to Barnham.

Beaver Space Camp

This weekend twenty-four 1st Barnham Beavers joined up with over 100 other beavers for an out of this world experience at the Arundel and Littlehampton District Beaver Space Camp.

Blasting off from Littlehampton at 09:45 hrs on Saturday, the Space Beavers participated in various activities; space challenges, solar experiments, astronaut training and rocket launching, to name just a few. Thanks to some last minute support from the technical team at Mission Control the Space Beavers were able to establish a satellite link and thus watch the England vs Sweden FIFA World Cup match!  

The Space Beaver’s shuttle took them closer to the Sun than planned! Despite the extreme heat, all successfully completed their space walk and returned to Earth on Sunday at 13:42 with only a few minor bumps and scrapes. To acknowledge their achievements, Captain Hedgehog presented all Space Beavers with the Space activity badge and special mission badge at a ceremony before being reunited with friends and family.   

Thorough planning and preparation is essential for all Space Missions; our thanks go to Captain Hedgehog and her support crew for piloting another successfully beaver mission 🚀

Trim Trail Challenge

This week our Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Peregrine Explorers took on the Trim Trail Challenge at Murrell’s Field, Barnham.

This sponsored event consisting of ten obstacles; chin ups, rope climb, sit ups, stride jumps, balance beam, monkey bars, run and leap, step up bench, parallel bars and shuttle run. It was certainly a challenge, but great fun too! Check out the photo gallery below.

All proceeds from the event are supporting two Peregrine Explorer Scouts; Lottie and Josh (both previously 1st Barnham Scouts) to attend the 24th World Scout Jamboree in USA 2019. With part of their fees enabling Scouts from developing countries to attend the Jamboree.  

So far, the sponsorship raised from the Trim Trail totals £412 [Update 19/07/18: Total raised = £450], and with some sponsorship yeah to be received we hope to reach our goal of £500. A massive THANK YOU to all the sponsors and the beavers, cubs, scouts and explorers for taking on the challenge.

Angry Birds AGM

Today’s Angry Birds AGM was a flying success, even if we do say so ourselves.

What better way to liven up our Annual General Meeting, than make some modroc ‘angry birds’ (prepared during Beavers, Cubs and Scouts over the last two weeks), insert bird into a catapult and fire it at a wall of cardboard boxes! Watch the birdie fly in the slow motion video below.

Chichester Dragon Boat Challenge

Today our two teams, the Ghost Riders and Phantom Quad, competed in Chichester Rotary Dragon Boat Challenge. Joining us in the junior competition was a team from 12th Chichester Scouts, their first year in the event.

After the heats, Ghost Riders and 12th Chichester had the two fastest times and so went through to battle it out in the final. After a very tight race and with less than a second between them, Ghost Riders did it, retaining the winning title for 1st Barnham for another year. The challenge is not just about a fun day out, it’s a fundraising event for CancerWise and charities supported by the Rotary Club of Chichester Priory. We are proud to say that this year our Scouts raised a total £656 in sponsorship.

 

Scout Survival Camp

This weekend Scouts from Phantom and Ghost Troops hiked from Warningcamp to Furzefield Scout Campsite, Angmering. On arrival the scouts had to build a shelter (using a limited number of supplied resources) these were to be slept in over night and cook their dinner on the fire.

Despite the threat of stormy weather, the scouts were not put off and the short showers were a good test for the shelters. This morning the scouts prepared their breakfast,  again one element needed to be cooked on the fire.
