Chichester Dragon Boat Challenge 2019

Back again to defend our title!
With 1st Westbourne Scouts and 12th Chichester Scouts providing excellent competition in today’s Chichester Rotary Dragon Boat (Youth) Challenge.

After the heats, 12th Chichester and 1st Barnham had the two fastest times and so went through to battle it out in the final. After a very tight race and with less than half a second between them, 1st Barnham did it, retaining the winning title for another year. You can view all the scoreboard results here.

The challenge is not just about a fun day out, it’s a fundraising event for CancerWise and charities supported by the Rotary Club of Chichester Priory. We are proud to say that this year our Scouts raised a total £390 in sponsorship.

ROLLS-ROYCE CELEBRATES PARTNERSHIP WITH LOCAL SCOUT GROUP BY PRESENTING BESPOKE BADGES

More than 50 boys and girls from the 1st Barnham Scout Group received their unique Rolls‑Royce patrol badges during a specially arranged visit to the Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood.

Based in a village close to the Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood, 1st Barnham Scout Group is divided into two troops, 1st Barnham Phantom and 1st Barnham Ghost, named after two of the company’s most celebrated models. Their new patrol badges, featuring the cars’ names and outlines stitched in gold thread, were designed by the Rolls-Royce Bespoke team, and made to official Scout Association specification.

In place of their regular evening meeting, members of both troops visited Rolls-Royce for a special event. The Scouts took part in team activities, games and quizzes around the themes of manufacturing, design and engineering. They also enjoyed a full tour of the manufacturing plant, where they met Associates working on the production line and saw cars being built first hand. The evening culminated in the presentation of their new badges, which now take pride of place on their Scout uniforms.

Mark Guy, Group Scout Leader, 1st Barnham Scout Group, said: “Our Scouts are incredibly proud of the link with Rolls-Royce; it’s something absolutely unique and special to them. These badges mean a tremendous amount and we’re very grateful to the team at Rolls-Royce for making this possible for them. The Scouts really enjoyed their visit to the manufacturing plant, and seeing the cars being built has given their troop names and new badges even more meaning.”

Andrew Ball, Head of Corporate Relations, Heritage and Philanthropy, said, “We’ve been involved with 1st Barnham Scout Group for a number of years and it’s always a pleasure to welcome them to the Home of Rolls-Royce. We are conscious that these boys and girls are the designers and engineers of the future, and it’s our privilege to play a part in encouraging their interest in manufacturing and STEM subjects as potential career options.”

Brighton Sewer Tour

On Saturday (29th Sept) fifteen 1st Barnham Scouts descended into the smelly underworld of the South Coast to tour Brighton’s sewers.

Starting off just underneath Brighton Pier at 9:30 am on Saturday, the gloved and hard-hat clad Scouts were guided through 366 metres of the Victorian sewer system, learning how they were first built, how they have changed over the past 100 or so years and seeing how our waste is dealt with first hand.

The Southern Water tour took the Scouts along narrow, whitewashed corridors and up and down metal ladders to see the route of the day’s waste and stormwater, which was flowing to the brand new water treatment plant in Peacehaven before being pumped out to sea.

Reactions to the sewer were mixed… “Why’s it so disgusting?” asked one Scout “because it’s a sewer,” came the answer. “Smells a bit like Glastonbury,” said another. “It would make a great log flume,” suggested a third.

After around 90 minutes underground the Scouts emerged through a manhole in the middle of Old Steine and – after a thorough wash – went off to enjoy the pleasures of Brighton Pier before heading back to Barnham.

A huge thank you to our amazing guide’s from Southern Water! To find out more about Brighton’s sewers, click here.
